About a Tower Called “Citrus Tower” by Betzi Simons

In one of the highest hills of Central Florida, in the city of Clermont, stands a tower built during a time in which roadside attractions were very popular. The reason why this tower called “Citrus Tower” was built takes us about 63 years into the past to a time when orange groves existed all around.

The tower was strategically located on Hwy. 27 between two attractions already in existence in that time: Silver Springs in Ocala and Cypress Gardens in Winter Haven. The dream of those who built the tower was to provide tourists with a place located in the middle of the groves so that these travelers already on the way to the other parks could see the impressive citrus industry of that time in Florida. They never could have imagined during the grand opening in 1956 how popular the tower would be, drawing more than 500,000 visitors a year in its first decade.

The foundation of the Citrus Tower is situated on a hill that is more that 300 feet above sea level. The tower itself, built using 5 million pounds of concrete and using 149,000 pounds of reinforced steel, is 226 feet high. The main attraction of the tower is to go up the elevator 19 floors to reach the observation deck located at more than 500 feet above sea level. Once the elevator doors open many are surprised to see the excellent view seen in all directions. It truly is a discovery of the beautiful scenery enjoyed in this part of the state.

Though orange groves are no longer seen, the tower offers unique views of the Clermont Chain of Lakes and hills that exist in these parts. On the clearest days you can see 35 miles to the horizon all around, including 8 counties of the state. It’s an impressive view to the east where the very large Lake Apopka can be seen; one of the largest in Florida. The tall downtown Orlando building as well as the giant Ferris wheel known as the “Orlando Eye” can be seen also. To the south, Disney buildings can be seen. These include: The Contemporary Resort, The Swan and Dolphin hotels, Space Mountain and the famous Epcot Ball.

If you bring children along on your visit, be sure to bring coins so that they can use the “coin drop”. This is a little box curiously located on the east wall of the observation deck. Coins can be inserted to hear them fall all the way to the first floor. For adults the tower offers a gorgeous landscape views as well as beautiful and romantic sunset views over the chain of lakes to the west.

There is no doubt that Central Florida offers many places of entertainment for those who visit. Perhaps that is why many don’t know about this historic Florida attraction. We hope to have piqued your curiosity and we look forward to welcoming you to this place that has by no means lost its charm.
